Summary

Gower Elementary School is a PK–5 public school in Nashville, TN, serving 631 students within the Metro Nashville Public Schools district. Despite its district's low statewide ranking, Gower stands out as a relative bright spot, beating district averages in every tested subject—most notably in ELA, where 42.7% of students are proficient compared to the district's 31.8%—and even edging past the state average in reading. The school also maintains a strong chronic absenteeism rate of 14.5%, well below the district's 23.3% and the state's 18.3%, suggesting students are showing up consistently.

However, Gower's academic momentum has slowed. The school's state percentile ranking has dropped from the 64th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 42nd percentile in 2025–2026, with math proficiency falling from 43.8% to 37.2% and science from 49.4% to 41.8% over that period. While Gower remains far ahead of nearby schools like Park Avenue Elementary School and Cockrill Elementary School—where fewer than 13% of students are proficient in math and ELA—it trails elite neighborhood schools by a wide margin: Julia Green Elementary School, Percy Priest Elementary School, and Sylvan Park Elementary School all boast ELA proficiency rates above 78%. Subgroup outcomes are a particular concern, with special education and low-income students ranking near the 5th percentile statewide.

Notably, Gower spends $17,376 per student—more than higher-performing nearby schools like Julia Green Elementary School ($15,834), Percy Priest Elementary School ($16,530), Sylvan Park Elementary School ($16,249), and Harpeth Valley Elementary School ($15,982)—suggesting that resources alone don't explain the performance gap. For parents, Gower offers a solid, district-beating education with strong attendance and a manageable student-teacher ratio of 16.8, but the declining test scores and uneven outcomes across student groups are trends worth monitoring closely.

Open Quote Thrilled with our experience! Our son is in kindergarten at Gower. Years ago we weren't sure about sending him, but as we got to know parents who actually have kids in the school and had a chance to meet some of the teachers and administrators, we realized our concerns were unfounded. The teachers are fantastic, my son has a learned a lot, and he's had a lot of fun. He's also had a great experience in the gifted program and after-school music classes. Couldn't be more pleased!
