Summary

Apollo Middle School serves 549 students in grades 6–8 in Antioch, TN, as part of Metro Nashville Public Schools. The school is currently ranked 570th out of 594 Tennessee middle schools, placing it in the 4th percentile with a 0-star rating, and it has remained in the bottom tier of the state for more than a decade. Proficiency rates fall dramatically below district and state averages in every core subject — only 7.8% of Apollo students are proficient in math and 9.1% in English language arts, compared to 43.0% and 40.6% statewide, respectively.

Despite the low overall numbers, there are a few encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has dropped steadily from 35.6% in 2020–21 to 19.6% in 2024–25, which is now better than the district average. English learners have been a relative strength, ranking at the 37th percentile statewide in 2024–25, and African American students have shown modest subgroup-level gains in recent years. The school's advanced Integrated Math I track also stands out, with 47.6% proficiency — above district and state averages for that exam. However, 6th graders outperform 7th and 8th graders in nearly every subject, suggesting that student gains in 6th grade are not being sustained as they move through middle school.

The contrast with nearby schools is stark. Valor Voyager Academy School, just 3.4 miles away, ranks in the 90th percentile with 56.6% math proficiency, while KIPP Antioch College Prep Middle School ranks in the 86th percentile. Even Antioch Middle School, itself low-performing, outperforms Apollo in every core subject. Apollo also spends $17,720 per student — more than several higher-performing nearby schools — which raises questions about cost-effectiveness. The central challenge for Apollo is understanding why nearby schools serving similar communities are producing dramatically better results while Apollo continues to sit near the very bottom of state rankings.
