Summary

Ripley High School serves 614 students in grades 9-12 in Ripley, Tennessee, as part of Lauderdale County Schools. The school has faced significant challenges in recent years, ranking 343rd out of 400 Tennessee high schools in the 2025-2026 cycle, placing it in the bottom 14th percentile with a 1-star rating. This puts it well behind Halls High School, its same-district counterpart, which ranks in the 62nd percentile, and slightly behind Covington High School, which ranks in the 18th percentile.

The most pressing concerns at Ripley are its graduation rate and attendance. Only 74.5% of students graduated in 2024-2025, down sharply from 94.6% in 2020-2021 and far below the state average of 90.5%. Every nearby school outperforms Ripley here — Covington High School graduates 98.1% of its students, Halls High School 93.0%, and Haywood High School 83.3%. Chronic absenteeism is also a major issue, with 37.1% of students missing school regularly — more than double the state rate of 18.3% and the highest among nearby schools. Academically, proficiency rates in Algebra I (7.2%), Algebra II (7.5%), and English I (13.7%) trail state averages by 16 to 30 percentage points.

There are some encouraging signs. Ripley's Geometry proficiency of 21.3% actually exceeds both the district average and Halls High School's rate of 10.4%. Biology proficiency has climbed from 20.8% to 33.1% since 2022-2023, and English II proficiency has nearly tripled. The school also spends more per student ($13,486) than Covington, which suggests funding alone isn't the issue. The clearest path forward is addressing attendance and student engagement — the two factors most strongly linked to Ripley's declining graduation rate and persistent academic struggles. Until chronic absenteeism is tackled, the school's other gains will be difficult to sustain.
