Summary

Lake County High School is a small, rural high school in Tiptonville, Tennessee, serving 209 students in grades 9–12 as the only high school in the Lake County Schools district. The school has ranked in the bottom quarter of Tennessee high schools in recent years, though it showed notable improvement in 2025–2026 by jumping from the 6th percentile to the 25th percentile statewide. It spends about $15,190 per student and maintains a low student-to-teacher ratio of roughly 10.9 to 1.

Academically, Lake County High School trails nearby Obion County Central High School and the state in most subjects. Only 5.4% of 9th graders are proficient in Algebra I, compared to 28.5% at Obion County Central and 26.1% statewide. English I proficiency is 10.2%, and geometry proficiency is 17.5%. English II is a genuine bright spot, with 59.1% proficiency, right at the state average. The school's graduation rate of 84.8% is below both the state (90.5%) and Obion County Central (93.0%), but its dropout rate of 4.3% is actually lower than both—a sign that students are sticking with school even when academics are tough. Chronic absenteeism has improved sharply, falling from 38.7% two years ago to 21.7%, though that remains above the state average.

There are other encouraging signs. Low-income students at Lake County High School reached the 50th percentile statewide in 2025–2026, and the school saw large gains in English II and Biology I proficiency. However, these gains have not reached every subject or every group of students, and the school still spends about $2,000 more per student than Obion County Central while achieving significantly lower test scores. That gap suggests the school has room to improve how resources are used. For parents, the picture is mixed: real progress is happening, but foundational math and English skills remain a serious concern.
