Summary

Emerald Academy is a public charter elementary school serving grades K-8 in Knoxville, Tennessee, with 458 students. The school is part of the Knox County school district, which is ranked 77 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. Emerald Academy has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Tennessee elementary schools over the past several years, with a ranking between 700-800 out of around 1,000 schools.

Emerald Academy's academic performance is a significant concern, as the school consistently underperforms the Knox County and Tennessee averages across all subject areas and grade levels on the TNReady assessments. In 2024-2025, only 31.4% of Emerald Academy students were proficient or better in Mathematics, compared to 43.2% in Knox County and 42.2% statewide. The school's performance is particularly low in English Language Arts, with only 27.6% of students proficient or better, compared to 42.6% in Knox County and 38.9% statewide. Emerald Academy's performance is weakest in 4th and 8th grade, where proficiency rates are significantly below the district and state averages.

While Emerald Academy performs relatively well for African American students, ranking in the top half of the state, it struggles with other subgroups, such as female students and low socioeconomic status students, ranking in the bottom quarter of the state. However, the school's performance for special education students is a bright spot, ranking in the top 5% of the state in 2023-2024. Emerald Academy's high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 13.3% to 21.0% over the past few years, may be a contributing factor to the school's low academic performance. Nearby public schools in the Knox County district, such as South Knox Elementary, Christenberry Elementary, and Beaumont Elementary/Magnet, outperform Emerald Academy across most academic measures.

Open Quote Amazing teachers and great opportunity for children in lower income communities to be ready for high-school and college Close Quote

Open Quote This was the most horrible experience as a substitute teacher I ever had. The staff turnover is extremely high it’s insane. The “ scholars” have 0 respect for staff or each other. You will get screamed at on a daily basis by the students . The teachers and staff suck , and will make you feel like you can’t do anything. Don’t work there and don’t send your kids there. Open Quote Terrible school. Don't send your child here if you want them to succeed. Abuse is happening under their noses and they refuse to report even though they are mandated reporters. Close Quote

Open Quote Emerald Academy is a horrible place to work. Dysfunction at every level, long hours, little support, and alarmingly high staff turnover. Students and parents are sold false promises as academics are subpar. Don’t work here, don’t send your kids here. Run away. Close Quote

Open Quote Emerald is a horrible place to learn and grow. Students often physically hurt others, scream at teachers, and purposefully cause distractions in learning. Administration can't or will not help teachers and reprimands them to not being able to control the chaos. Close Quote
