Summary

South Knox Elementary School is a small PK–5 school in Knoxville, TN, serving 188 students as part of Knox County Schools, and it stands out as a high-performing school in an area where many nearby elementary schools struggle.

South Knox is a strong academic outlier. For the 2025–2026 school year, it ranked 149th out of 1,019 Tennessee elementary schools, earning a 4-star rating and placing in the 85th percentile statewide. Its students score dramatically above both district and state averages in math, English language arts, and science. In math, 65.1% of students are proficient, compared to 45% for the district and 43% statewide. The contrast with nearby schools is stark: Green Magnet Math And Science Academy, less than a mile away, sits in the 3rd percentile with just 11.3% math proficiency, while Dogwood Elementary School ranks in the 13th percentile. Even the closest comparable school, Beaumont Elementary/Magnet School, trails South Knox by roughly 16 percentage points in math.

What makes this even more impressive is that South Knox achieves these results across all student groups. The school ranks in the 95th percentile for special education students and the 82nd percentile for students from low-income families — groups that often lag statewide. This success is also cost-effective; South Knox spends about $17,958 per student, less than several lower-performing neighbors like Maynard Elementary School, which spends nearly $32,000 per student yet ranks in the 3rd percentile. This isn't a fluke, either. The school has climbed from the 18th percentile in 2016–2017 to its current top-tier ranking. While ELA scores have declined from a peak of 75% proficiency in 2023–2024, South Knox remains a remarkably effective and efficient school in a challenging local context.

Open Quote You can't find a better and more intimate school! I have 2 children there and have been so impressed with the love my children feel here. Faculty, staff, and community members go above and beyond to ensure my children love learning! Also enrichment activities such as STEM Scouts, Student TV News Crew, 4H, Student Counsel, Running Club, and other after school programs give kids additional opportunities to grow academically. This school is growing and bringing pride to the South Knoxville Community. Close Quote

Open Quote The staff at this school is amazing. I transferred my children from Dogwood because the student teacher ratio was so high at Dogwood. SKES has very small classes and excellent staff. The teachers all know every kid and each ones temperament.
When we came, Dr. Nicely was not the principal, but she has made the school so much warmer and has brought many programs and recognition to this tiny school nestled by the river! We love SKES! Close Quote
