Ridgedale Alternative School

Ridgedale Alternative School is a small alternative school in Knoxville, Tennessee, serving just 50 students in grades 1–12 as part of Knox County Schools, a district ranked in the 45th percentile of Tennessee districts with a 2-star rating. The school serves students who, for academic, behavioral, or circumstantial reasons, need a setting outside the traditional school environment. Its most defining features are severe chronic absenteeism and very low academic proficiency.

By contrast, Knox County Virtual School achieves 36.7% ELA proficiency and an 89.8% graduation rate, while Samuel Everett School of Innovation posts proficiency rates above 54% in all subjects, and both The iLearn Institute at Lenoir City (51.9% ELA) and Maryville Virtual School (48.0% ELA) far outperform Ridgedale. These comparisons show that alternative schools can achieve much stronger outcomes, though Ridgedale likely serves students with more severe challenges. For parents, the clearest takeaway is that attendance is the highest-priority issue, and the lack of outcome data leaves important questions about the school's effectiveness unanswered.
