Summary

East Ridge Elementary School is a large PK–5 school in Chattanooga, TN, serving 959 students — nearly double the average enrollment of nearby elementary schools — and is part of Hamilton County Schools. The school's state ranking has been volatile over the past decade, climbing from the bottom 3–4% in the mid-2010s to the mid-20s percentile by 2018–2019, but it has since slipped backward, with the most recent year showing a sharp decline to the 7th percentile statewide.

Academically, proficiency rates at East Ridge are less than half the district and state averages in every tested subject. In the latest year, math proficiency was 18.7% (versus 40.0% district and 43.0% state), English Language Arts was 16.4% (versus 38.3% and 40.6%), and science was 18.6% (versus 46.6% and 46.9%) — all down sharply from the previous year. East Ridge does outperform several nearby schools in math and science, including Calvin Donaldson Environmental Science Academy, Montessori Elementary at Highland Park School, Orchard Knob Elementary School, and Chattanooga Charter School of Excellence. However, Barger Academy of Fine Arts (33.3% math) and East Lake Elementary School (38.4% math), both just a short drive away, achieve far stronger results. English Language Arts is a particular concern: East Ridge's 16.4% proficiency trails schools with similar math scores, including Woodmore Elementary School and Spring Creek Elementary School.

Chronic absenteeism at East Ridge is 20.3%, above the district (17.1%) and state (18.3%) averages, though it has improved steadily since 2020–2021. Nearby schools with much lower absenteeism, such as East Side Elementary School (5.0%) and Clifton Hills Elementary School (8.4%), tend to outperform East Ridge academically. Per-pupil spending is also the lowest among nearby schools at $16,497, compared with an average of roughly $20,000 for the comparison group. This combination of high enrollment, low investment, and declining test scores suggests the school faces real challenges — though the gradual improvement in attendance offers a small sign of progress.

Open Quote It is disgusting to do what the school has done filing a report with the state on a 5-year-old boy with autism who hugged one classmate and kissed another on the cheek! A 5 year old and with autism. Miserable place. Do not send your kids here unless you want them discriminating against your possibly autistic child who isn't even 10 and now stuck for life with a 'sex offender' record. They have ruined his life before it has even begun and he neither did anything to warrant the record nor comprehend the concept of boundaries. I hope the family sues the school and state and wins. Ludicrous! Close Quote

Open Quote East Ridge Elementary has been the best school my daughter has ever been to. They genuinely care about each child. My daughters self esteem confidence and stability have grown by leaps and bounds. We had struggles this year and ERE helped our family find the resources to get back on our feet. Our little... Now 4th grader, is Honor Roll she is inspired and motived to learn and grow. She LOVES going to school daily and even misses it when shes off. I want to add Mrs Airial - 3rd grade teacher is one of the most phenomenal teachers we have ever encountered. The Girls Inc program is also an empowering positive program that we are hoping she can continue to grow from. Close Quote
