Washburn School

Washburn School is a PK–12 alternative school in Washburn, Tennessee, serving 477 students within Grainger County Schools. Despite its alternative designation, Washburn is an unusually large alternative school — more than ten times the size of nearby alternative programs — which allows it to offer a broader curriculum and more comprehensive services to its students.

One of the most encouraging stories at Washburn is student persistence. The school's graduation rate was 95.3% in 2023–2024, well above the district rate of 83.8% and the state rate of 89.2%. Algebra II and English II also compare favorably to district averages, and 7th- and 8th-grade science and social studies scores exceed state averages in several cases. With a student–teacher ratio near 13:1 and rising per-student spending, Washburn appears to be a stable, high-graduation school serving a complex student population — one that keeps students engaged even as it works to lift foundational academic skills.
