East Junior High School

East Junior High School is a middle school in Somerville, Tennessee, serving 243 students in grades 6–8 within the Fayette County Schools district, which ranks in the 1st percentile statewide. Despite that challenging context, the school is showing signs of meaningful progress. In 2025–2026, East Junior High ranked 431st out of 594 Tennessee middle schools (27th percentile), up from 538th out of 587 in 2023–2024 (8th percentile). The school has also moved from a 0-star to a 1-star rating, and proficiency rates in every subject have improved dramatically — though they still trail state averages by roughly 15–20 points.

The biggest concern is chronic absenteeism: 40.9% of students were chronically absent in 2024–2025, nearly double the district rate and more than double the state's 18.3%. That rate has climbed from about 25% in 2023–2024, making attendance the clearest barrier to further improvement. At the same time, the school has made dramatic academic gains since 2023–2024 — math proficiency more than tripled, and science nearly quadrupled in a single year. The contrast with Arlington Middle School, an elite school just 18 miles away with 62.7% math proficiency, highlights both how far East has come and how much work remains. If the school can address attendance while maintaining its recent academic gains, it has a real path forward.
