Summary

Oakland Elementary School serves 621 students in pre-kindergarten through 5th grade in Oakland, Tennessee, as part of Fayette County Schools. The school currently ranks in the 13th percentile statewide — 890th out of 1,019 Tennessee elementary schools — placing it near the middle of its own district but far behind the highly ranked schools just a short drive away. Within Fayette County, Buckley-Carpenter Elementary ranks in the 18th percentile and Southwest Elementary in the 10th, but nearby Crosswind Elementary ranks 8th in the state, Arlington Elementary ranks 43rd, and Donelson Elementary ranks 9th.

Academically, the picture is mixed. English Language Arts is the strongest subject: 25.7% of students are proficient, which is above the district average and up sharply from 18.3% the year before. Math, however, is stuck at 16.3% proficiency — far below the state's 43% — and science sits at 20.1%. By comparison, Buckley-Carpenter outperforms Oakland in every subject, and top nearby schools like Crosswind and Lakeland Elementary post proficiency rates in the 70–90% range. One bright spot: 4th graders scored 41.1% proficient in ELA, near the state rate. But those gains disappear by 5th grade, where only 10.3% of students are proficient in ELA — a drop of more than 30 points.

The most urgent concern is attendance. Chronic absenteeism jumped from 16.8% to 25.7% in a single year — the highest among all nearby schools and well above the state rate of 18.3%. Top-performing schools in the area report rates below 8%. On the positive side, English Learner students at Oakland have historically performed well, ranking in the 85th percentile statewide in 2022–23, which shows the school can produce strong outcomes when supports are targeted effectively. The challenge now is applying those same strategies more broadly while working to reverse the attendance trend and figure out what is causing the steep drop-off in student progress between 4th and 5th grade.
