Summary

Celina K-8 School is a public school in Celina, Tennessee, serving 528 students in grades PK through 8 in a rural, economically challenged area of Clay County. The school is the largest in Clay County Schools and consistently outperforms its district average in every subject, though it trails state proficiency rates by roughly 7 to 12 percentage points. Social studies is a clear bright spot, with 43.8% of students proficient—nearly closing the gap to the state average and far outpacing the district's 36.5%. Early-grade reading is also strong, with 4th grade ELA (49% proficient) nearly matching the state average and 6th grade ELA (46.2%) not far behind.

The school's biggest challenges appear in specific grade levels and subjects. Only 19.6% of 5th graders are proficient in math, compared to 47.4% statewide, while 8th grade ELA proficiency sits at just 17.2% versus 32.3% statewide. These sharp drop-offs from strong early-grade performance suggest a difficult transition into middle grades. Chronic absenteeism, however, is a success story: it has fallen from 19.3% in 2022–2023 to 14.2% in 2024–2025, now below both the district (15.2%) and state (18.3%) rates. The school spends about $13,127 per student, which is less than some lower-performing peers, indicating relatively efficient use of resources.

Within Clay County, Celina K-8 School is clearly the anchor, outscoring Hermitage Springs Elementary by 7 to 28 percentage points across subjects despite spending less per student. Among nearby PK-8 schools statewide, Celina sits in the middle tier—similar to Hilham Elementary and Allons Elementary, but behind Dodson Branch Elementary in math (57.6%) and Red Boiling Springs Elementary in attendance. Families at Celina K-8 will find a school that leads its district, succeeds in social studies and early literacy, and is steadily improving attendance—but one that still has meaningful work ahead in middle-grade math and reading.

Open Quote This school is horrible. Students rights are being violated the staff doesn't follow policy and you would think they would at least pretend they care about children and education because that's what they are supposed to be paid for. Students are unmonitored and put in little rooms with no windows as punishment. Bus drivers let kids smoke on the bus! Close Quote
