Walland Elementary School is a small K-5 public school in the community of Walland, Tennessee, serving 284 students in the Blount County Schools district. The school has historically ranked in the lower half of Tennessee elementary schools, but it has shown steady improvement in recent years. In the 2025-2026 school year, Walland Elementary School ranked in the 33rd percentile statewide, up from the 19th percentile in 2023-2024 and the 31st percentile the year after. That is progress, though it still trails district averages and many neighbors.

Math is Walland's clearest area of weakness. Only 28.6% of students scored proficient in math, compared with 39.5% for Blount County Schools and 43.0% statewide. Third grade is especially concerning, with just 18.9% of students proficient in math. English Language Arts, on the other hand, is a genuine bright spot. That suggests Walland is serving some of its most vulnerable students effectively, even as overall scores remain below average. The school also improved its chronic absenteeism rate from 23.1% to 17.2%, in line with district and state averages.

Compared with nearby schools, Walland's position is a mixed story. Within Blount County Schools, Porter Elementary School and Prospect Elementary School post much stronger results, while Townsend Elementary School ranks lower. Nearby Maryville City Schools — including Foothills Elementary School, Sam Houston Elementary School, and John Sevier Elementary School — all rank in the 91st–97th percentiles, making the gap especially stark. Walland also has the lowest per-student spending among its neighbors at $13,128 per student, making its recent ELA and attendance gains even more noteworthy. The trajectory is encouraging, but with math proficiency still well below state averages and 3rd grade math an early-warning signal, the school has clear room to grow.

Walland Elementary School is a community centered and supported school that has a strong staff who cares greatly about all students. The students are excellent and the families are very supportive. I am disappointed in this Schooldigger.com's ranking of Walland and its criteria for the rankings. Walland is a school that takes in a diverse student population and grows each student far and above other schools in the area. They have monthly family activities called Family Fun Nights, the teachers communicate with the parents, and they have a lot of technology, almost every student has a designated device to use each day. I am proud to be a part of Walland Elementary School. Close Quote
