Summary

Memphis Virtual School is an alternative school in Memphis, TN, serving 309 students in grades 4–12 within the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district. The most striking strength of this virtual school is its chronic absenteeism rate of just 7.5% in 2024–2025, far better than the district average of 30.2% and even better than most brick-and-mortar schools in the area. Among nearby alternative schools, Carver College and Career Academy has a chronic absenteeism rate of 66.8%, and Shrine School sits at 33.9%. Yet even Germantown Online's all-grades math proficiency is only 10.5%, highlighting how virtual schooling itself presents academic challenges. Per-pupil spending has more than doubled to $15,496 over three years, but results remain mixed. Within its own alternative school ecosystem, Memphis Virtual School outperforms Carver on nearly every measure and offers a stable, engaging path for students who need a second chance at graduation, though math intervention is clearly its greatest need.
