Memphis School of Excellence is a combined middle/high school serving 575 students in grades 6–12 on Winchester Road in southeast Memphis, within the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district. The school's state ranking has been consistently low—it ranked 353rd out of 400 Tennessee high schools (12th percentile) in 2025–2026, earning 1 star, a decline from 308th of 392 (21st percentile) in 2023–2024. Its best recent year was 2016–2017, when it reached the 55th percentile.

The school's clearest strength is keeping students enrolled and graduating. MSE reports graduation rates of 98.6% (2023–2024) and 96.6% (2022–2023), far above the district's 82.8% and state's 89.2%. Its dropout rate was just 1.4% in 2023–2024, versus 14.9% for the district and 6.7% for the state. Nearby, only Power Center Academy High School (95.1%) is comparable; Kirby High School graduates 84.0%, Oakhaven High School 78.6%, Overton High School 77.9%, Wooddale High School 73.7%, and Sheffield High School 56.6%. Chronic absenteeism is also much lower at MSE (21.2% in 2024–2025) than at neighboring traditional high schools, which range from 42.8% at Oakhaven to 73.1% at Wooddale, while Power Center Academy High School posts the best rate at 13.3%.

Academically, MSE trails district and state averages in most subjects. The most concerning trend is for economically disadvantaged and Hispanic students, whose statewide rankings fell sharply in two years—from the 63rd to the 8th percentile for low-income students and from the 36th to the 11th for Hispanic students.
