Summary

Snowden Elementary/Middle is a public magnet school serving grades PK-8 in Memphis, Tennessee, with 1,272 students enrolled. The school is part of the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district, which is ranked 135 out of 139 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Snowden's performance on TNReady tests is generally lower than the district and state averages across all subjects and grade levels. However, the school's performance is stronger compared to some nearby schools, particularly in mathematics and science. For example, in 2024-2025, Snowden's 3rd-8th grade mathematics proficiency rate of 23.9% was higher than the district's 22.6% and the state's 42.2%. Snowden's White students and English Language Learner students also perform exceptionally well, ranking in the top 5-13% of Tennessee elementary schools in these subgroups.

One area of concern for Snowden is its consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 17.2% to 29.5% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the district and state averages. Despite this, Snowden's per-student spending has increased from $10,439 in 2020-2021 to $14,383 in 2023-2024, which is higher than the district average. Compared to nearby schools, Snowden generally outperforms schools like Vollentine Elementary and Compass Community School Binghampton Campus in mathematics and science, but Idlewild Elementary, another nearby magnet school, significantly outperforms Snowden across all academic subjects and grade levels.

Open Quote Our Rotary Club, Midtown Rotary, has sponsored a "Laws of Life' essay contest at Snowden for the past four years. The teachers and principal have been really helpful to us as community volunteers. We have also volunteered at Snowden as readers and tutors, and for other special events. We also built a monarch butterfly garden there. We have really enjoyed the atmosphere of helpfulness, curiosity and learning at Snowden. Close Quote
