Journey Coleman School

Public, Charter Grades
Summary

Journey Coleman School is a public charter elementary school in Memphis, Tennessee that serves grades PK-8. The school is part of the Achievement School District, which is ranked last out of 139 districts in the state and has a 0-star rating.

Despite relatively high spending of $16,532 per student and a student-teacher ratio of 19:1, Journey Coleman School consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of elementary schools in Tennessee, with proficiency rates on state assessments that are significantly below state and district averages across all subjects and grade levels. For example, in 2023-2024, only 11.5% of students were proficient or better in mathematics compared to the state average of 39.7%, and only 13.1% were proficient or better in English Language Arts compared to the state average of 37.6%. The school's performance is particularly low for its African American and low socioeconomic status student subgroups.

Nearby public and charter schools in the Memphis-Shelby County Schools district generally outperform Journey Coleman School on academic measures. For instance, Promise Academy - Spring Hill and Egypt Elementary have higher proficiency rates and rankings compared to Journey Coleman School, despite serving a similar predominantly African American student population. The lack of improvement in Journey Coleman School's performance over time suggests the need for a deeper examination of the school's instructional practices, resource allocation, and overall strategy for supporting student learning.

Open Quote This is a great school. I have two children that attend this school. I love the way they keep me informed about my children progress, and whenever there is a problem they will call you asap. However, the previous schools my children attended did not keep me informed. Close Quote
