The 11 middle schools serving grades 6-8 in Williamson County Schools, a 5-star district ranked #3 out of 141 in Tennessee, collectively enroll about 9,239 students, with school sizes ranging from 540 to 1,388. Across the district, proficiency averages for 2025-2026 are strong: 75.1% in math, 70.5% in ELA, 76.9% in science, and 81.5% in social studies, far exceeding state norms. Most rank in the top 8% statewide, making this one of Tennessee's most academically elite districts.

Woodland Middle School is the undisputed academic leader, ranking #2 in the state in 2025-2026 with the district's highest proficiency in every core subject, including 82.5% math and 91.0% social studies. Brentwood Middle School is the consistency model, ranking #3 in the state in both 2024-2025 and 2025-2026, and posting the district's best 8th-grade math score at 87.6%. Sunset Middle School achieves top-10 status while spending the least per student, about $12,144. At the other end, Fairview Middle School is the clear outlier, with a 4-star rating, state rank falling from #83 to #141 over three years, the lowest proficiency in every subject, and the highest chronic absenteeism rate at 11.9%. Notably, Fairview also spends the most per student ($15,574), illustrating that spending alone does not drive performance.

Two patterns stand out. First, every middle school improved ELA proficiency from 2024-2025 to 2025-2026, with Heritage Middle School posting the largest gain at +6.4 points, suggesting a coordinated district literacy effort. Second, 8th-grade ELA dips are common: Fred J Page Middle School drops from 76.7% in 6th grade to 60.0% in 8th grade, and Spring Station Middle School falls from 54.6% to 44.7%. In math, Mill Creek Middle School and Legacy Middle School show strong Algebra I proficiency (88.6% and 92.2%, respectively), indicating many 8th graders are taking high-school-level coursework that standard test scores alone do not capture. Overall, Woodland Middle School, Brentwood Middle School, and Sunset Middle School represent the academic core of the district, while Fairview Middle School warrants targeted attention around attendance and support.
