Summary:

McKenzie Special School District is home to just one middle school, McKenzie Middle School, which serves grades 5 through 8 with 378 students in the town of McKenzie, Tennessee, and the district ranks 23rd out of 141 Tennessee districts (4 stars, 84th percentile).

McKenzie Middle School is a school of contrasts: it shines in Social Studies, where all-grades proficiency is 57.1% versus the state's 51.4%, and its 8th graders outperform state averages in every subject—most notably in math, where 56.0% are proficient compared to 38.3% statewide. Chronic absenteeism is remarkably low at just 8.1%, less than half the state average of 18.3%. However, the school's weakest subject is English Language Arts, with only 33.6% proficient (state: 40.6%), and the lower grades show concerning gaps. Fifth graders trail the state badly in math (32.3% vs. 47.4%) and ELA (29.5% vs. 42.7%), while 7th graders lag in math (30.6% vs. 39.2%) and science (35.7% vs. 47.8%). These early-middle-school struggles are a red flag, especially as the school's overall ranking has slipped from the 76th percentile in 2023–2024 to the 66th percentile in 2025–2026, even though attendance is excellent.

For parents, the picture is one of a solid but uneven school. The standout 8th-grade cohort suggests that students can achieve strong results by the end of middle school, and Social Studies is consistently above the state average at every grade except 7th. But the gaps in 5th and 7th grade math and ELA indicate that not all students are getting the support they need early on. Per-student spending is $11,493, and the district's overall positive ranking is likely carried by the school's strengths. If the school can replicate its 8th-grade success in the earlier grades, it could easily climb back toward the 76th percentile. For now, McKenzie Middle School offers a strong foundation—excellent attendance, a clear academic strength in Social Studies, and a high-performing 8th grade—but targeted help for younger students in math and reading would make the biggest difference.
