Houston County Schools serves a small, rural area of Tennessee with four schools — two elementary schools, one middle school, and one high school — enrolling about 1,258 students total. The district overall ranks in the 6th percentile of Tennessee districts, but individual schools vary from the 23rd to 33rd percentile, so some are clearly doing better than others. Erin Elementary School has been the district’s biggest bright spot, jumping from the 16th to the 33rd percentile in a single year and now posting the best elementary math (39.4%) and ELA (37.1%) scores in the district. It also has the lowest per-student spending ($11,886), showing that cost does not automatically drive results. Houston County High School also stands out with an excellent 98.8% graduation rate and competitive scores in Biology and English II, but its 32.6% chronic absenteeism rate is nearly double the state average and likely hurts its Algebra I and II scores.

Houston County Middle School is the district’s weakest academic performer, with just 17.6% math proficiency versus the state’s 43.0%, and its 23rd percentile ranking is the lowest among the four schools. Even so, it has the best attendance in the district at 14.0% chronic absenteeism, meaning the academic struggles are not simply an attendance problem. Tennessee Ridge Elementary School spends the most per student ($14,088) yet ranks lower than Erin Elementary in math and ELA, and its star rating has slipped from 2 stars to 1 star over the past few years. It still beats the district average in elementary math and science, but the overall trend is one of stagnation.

The clearest district-wide issue is mathematics: elementary schools hover near 38% proficiency, middle school math collapses to 17.6%, and high school Algebra I proficiency is just 8.5% — a massive gap from the state. Grade-level patterns also reveal trouble spots, such as Erin Elementary’s sharp 4th-grade ELA drop to 22.6%, while Tennessee Ridge shows steady growth by 5th grade. For parents, the takeaway is that Houston County High School and Erin Elementary are the stronger choices academically, while the middle school needs the most support. Any improvement effort should focus on math intervention, reducing high school absenteeism, and learning from Erin’s recent turnaround.
