Summary:

Zip code 57273 has four schools serving kindergarten through grade 12: Enemy Swim Day School (K–8) and three schools in Waubay, with a combined reported enrollment of 335 students. The clearest academic standout is Waubay Elementary - 02, which was above state results in both reported subjects in 2025–2026.

Waubay Elementary - 02 led the reported Smarter Balanced results: 74% were proficient in all-grades ELA, 25 percentage points above the state, and 55% in math, 11 points above. Waubay Middle School - 03 was below the state in ELA and math by 4 points in each. Waubay High School - 01 had a split profile: 11th-grade ACT math was 58%, 24 points above the state, while ELA was 33%, 15 points below. Its 47% graduation rate was 40 points below the state; its 15% dropout rate was 13 points above. Elementary science is another concern: fifth-grade proficiency was 20%, 21 points below the state. No test results were reported for Enemy Swim.

Elementary and Middle both improved in ELA and math from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026, especially Elementary ELA, which rose 30 points; Middle ELA rose 10 points and math rose 5. The exception is Elementary fifth-grade science, which fell 30 points over the same period. SchoolDigger placed Elementary at the 59th percentile in 2025–2026 and High at the 47th; Middle’s latest listed ranking was the 30th percentile in 2024–2025. Chronic absenteeism was 12% at Elementary but 35% at Middle in 2025–2026, compared with 20% statewide. In 2024–2025, free/reduced lunch eligible rates were 65% at Elementary, 63% at High and 63% at Middle; Enemy Swim reported that all students receive free meals through Community Eligibility. Results are not fully like-for-like because the schools serve different grades and use different assessments.
