Summary

South Carolina Virtual Charter School (SCVCS) is a K-12 virtual public charter school in West Columbia, SC, serving 2,180 students under the Charter Institute at Erskine district. This fully online school offers families a flexible alternative to traditional brick-and-mortar classrooms, and it has become one of the larger virtual options in the Columbia area.

SCVCS stands out most dramatically for student engagement. Its chronic absenteeism rate is just 1.2%—far better than the state average of 22.3% and even better than nearby virtual competitor School Connections Academy (0.4% is the only school that beats it). The school also posts a very low dropout rate of 1.0% and has improved its graduation rate from 71.2% to 85.6% over the past five years. Academically, SCVCS shines in English, with 87.98% proficiency on the English 2 EOCEP exam—outperforming both the district and state. It also beats Carolus Online Academy in nearly every subject and grade level, and keeps pace with or exceeds American Leadership Academy South Carolina-Lexington Campus in several ELA categories.

The school's biggest challenge is mathematics. Across grades 3-8, math proficiency rates lag significantly behind state averages—for example, only 27.1% of 3rd graders are proficient in math versus 59.2% statewide. This is a common hurdle for virtual schools, and it's worth noting that SCVCS still outperforms Carolus Online Academy in math. On the plus side, SCVCS is cost-efficient, spending $9,690 per student compared to $11,553 at American Leadership Academy and $12,810 at Clear Dot Charter School. For families seeking a virtual education with strong student engagement, improving graduation rates, and solid English instruction, SCVCS is a compelling option—just be prepared to supplement math learning at home.
