Summary

Fort Mill Elementary is a public school in Fort Mill, SC, serving 729 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the top-ranked York 04 district.

While Fort Mill Elementary remains a solid school overall—ranking in the 71st percentile statewide with a 4-star rating—it has slipped from its former top-tier status over the past decade. The school now sits at #191 in South Carolina, a significant gap compared to nearby elementary schools like River Trail Elementary (#11) and Kings Town Elementary (#9). Academically, the school performs at or slightly above state averages in English Language Arts and Math, but trails the district average by roughly 15-20 percentage points in most subjects and grade levels. One notable concern is a steep decline in math proficiency as students advance: 3rd graders score 63.5% proficient, but by 5th grade that drops to just 51.9%. The school also struggles to serve specific student groups, particularly low-income students (ranking in the bottom 35th percentile) and students with disabilities, whose performance has fallen dramatically from the 87th to the 15th percentile in just a few years.

On the positive side, Fort Mill Elementary benefits from a favorable 12.5:1 student-teacher ratio, high per-student spending of $14,786, and low chronic absenteeism (7.1% vs. 22.3% statewide). However, these advantages haven't translated into stronger results. A compelling comparison is Harrisburg Elementary, just 3 miles away in the Lancaster 01 district, which serves more students with a higher student-teacher ratio and less funding, yet outperforms Fort Mill Elementary in every tested subject. This suggests the school's challenges stem more from instructional approaches and support systems than from resources. For parents considering this school, it's worth asking about math intervention strategies for upper grades and how the school plans to support its growing population of students who need additional academic help.

Open Quote My child has been going to Fort Mill Elementary since Kindergarten and is now in the fourth grade. I am simply amazed by the school's leadership (Mrs. Helms) as well as the teachers. They are very nurturing while not being overly so. They REALLY care about the welfare of the children. I have NEVER had any communication issues and if I ever did have a concern, it was addressed right away. My daughter is on a 6th grade reading level and tested as being in the top 10% as far as scores for her age/grade group. And this is only in the first two weeks of school this year (2010). She has always tested lower in the beginning (as I'm sure most children do) - by the end of the school year it is amazing to see how much better she does (when she does well already!). We actually moved to Fort Mill, SC from California and chose Fort Mill specifically for their schools. We have not been disappointed. Close Quote
