Summary

W. C. Sullivan Middle in Rock Hill, SC, serves 827 students in grades 6-8 within the York 03 school district, earning a 3-star rating that places it in the middle of the pack statewide.

If your child excels in advanced math, this school has a standout program. In 2024-2025, 95.1% of students taking the Algebra 1 EOCEP exam scored proficient or higher—dramatically outpacing both the district (77.16%) and state (73.95%) averages. This strength has been consistent for three straight years. English Language Arts is another bright spot, with proficiency rates in all three grade levels (54-56%) exceeding district averages. However, standard grade-level math tells a different story. Proficiency rates in 6th (34.7%), 7th (39.2%), and 8th (39.4%) grade math all fall below state averages, suggesting the school excels at preparing a select group for advanced coursework while struggling to bring the majority to grade-level proficiency. There's also a notable gender gap—the school ranks in the 53rd percentile for female students but only the 41st percentile for male students, a disparity that has persisted for three years.

One of the most significant concerns is the school's declining effectiveness with its largest demographic. Over 62% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, yet the school's ranking for low-income students has dropped sharply from the 46th percentile in 2023-2024 to just the 31st percentile in 2025-2026. Chronic absenteeism (21.6%) remains stubbornly high—well above the district average (18.1%) and far higher than nearby York 04 schools like Springfield Middle (5.7% absenteeism) or Gold Hill Middle. Despite spending $15,281 per student—higher than most comparable schools in both districts—the school's overall performance remains middling. This raises questions about whether resources are being effectively targeted, particularly toward grade-level math support and improving attendance.

Open Quote I know that people boost about the school having and IB program but for the average or below average student it makes them not want to go to school because what teacher would not rather teach smart advanced students than those they have to spend one on one time helping. I have worked hard with a child who has a severe learning disability to get him to enjoy school but the 5 hours of homework he has to do a night to keep on pace with his classmates make him fall asleep during dinner or gives him panic attacks on the weekend when he is supposed to be enjoying life. I am going to do everything in my power to move so he does not have to attend this school next year or find finacial aid to send him to a private school where I will pay for the one on one attention. If you have a choice with a child who is average or struggles do everything in your power to avoid this school it will not make your life better at all. Close Quote
