Summary

Mayo Elementary is a small, rural school in Mayo, SC, serving 328 students in grades PK through 5 as part of the high-performing Spartanburg 02 district.

What truly sets Mayo Elementary apart is its remarkable success with students from low-income backgrounds. With over 75% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, the school's low-income students rank in the 97th percentile statewide—a top-tier achievement that shows the school is effectively closing achievement gaps. The school has also made incredible strides in attendance: chronic absenteeism dropped from 31.3% in 2022-2023 to just 10.6% in 2024-2025, now well below the district average of 18.8% and among the lowest in the area. This improvement likely contributes to strong academic results, particularly in science, where 4th graders consistently outperform district and state averages (68.7% proficient vs. 51.6% statewide). Early-grade math is another strength, with 3rd graders hitting 73.9% proficiency in 2025-2026 compared to the state average of 59.2%.

However, parents should be aware of a consistent pattern: 5th-grade math proficiency drops significantly from earlier grades. In 2025-2026, only 55.8% of 5th graders were proficient in math, compared to 73.9% of 3rd graders—a trend that has repeated for several years. This is more pronounced than at nearby Cooley Springs-Fingerville Elementary, a peer school just 8 miles away that ranks in the top 10% statewide and outperforms Mayo in math at every grade level. That said, Mayo still ranks in the 77th percentile statewide overall, and its spending of $13,458 per student is efficient given the high-needs population it serves. With a favorable 14.2:1 student-teacher ratio and a dramatic attendance turnaround, Mayo Elementary is a school that clearly works hard for its students—and delivers impressive results despite the challenges it faces.

Open Quote Most of the teachers here are helpful and kind. Some, however, are lazy. Some are bullies.
My child was pulled out of this school due to bullying by classmates and teachers, alike. If you have another option for elementary learning, I'd look into it first before choosing this school. Close Quote
