Summary

Socastee High is a large public high school in Myrtle Beach, SC, serving 1,720 students in grades 9-12 as part of the highly rated Horry 01 school district.

Socastee High is a solid, above-average school with a strong graduation rate of 89.0%, which beats the state average and nearly matches its district. What truly sets it apart is its exceptional support for students with disabilities, ranking in the 93rd percentile statewide, and its outstanding performance with students from low-income backgrounds, ranking in the 89th percentile. This means the school has developed highly effective, targeted programs that help some of its most vulnerable students thrive. However, there are areas of concern. Algebra 1 proficiency has dropped dramatically to just 55.16%, far below the district average of 77.66% and a 20-point decline from the prior year. Chronic absenteeism is also a persistent challenge at 23.0%, higher than both the district and state averages. Interestingly, the school's performance varies significantly by student group, with strong results for some populations but below-average outcomes for others, suggesting that successful strategies for certain groups aren't being applied consistently across the entire student body.

When compared to nearby schools, Socastee holds its own in several areas. It clearly outperforms Myrtle Beach High, ranking much higher overall (56th vs. 151st) with a better graduation rate and lower chronic absenteeism. It also has a lower dropout rate than Carolina Forest High and a higher graduation rate, though Carolina Forest excels in math proficiency. The most striking gap is with St. James High, which significantly outperforms Socastee in Algebra 1 (97.06% vs. 55.16%) and English. While Socastee's per-student spending of $14,081 is higher than several peers, the school's next step is clear: address the math decline and absenteeism to unlock its full potential.

Open Quote This is not a family friendly campus. The teachers in general do not respect the parents. Worst part is they lock down their graduation ceremony with no overflow room for family members who are late as a result of extenuating circumstances. I "got in" but some of my family members who were coming from out of town and ran into traffic making them late were refused entry. They hire police to keep families out and treat you like a criminal for wanting to support your children. Very disappointed in this school. The policies are rigid and geared towards humiliation.
