Summary

Orange Grove Charter School is a public charter school in Charleston, SC, serving 1,170 students in grades PK through 8 within the Charleston 01 school district.

Orange Grove is a standout performer, consistently ranking in the top 2% of elementary schools in South Carolina for the past decade. In the most recent school year, it ranked 14th out of 649 schools statewide. Academic proficiency is exceptionally high, with English Language Arts scores ranging from 80.5% to 94% and math scores from 79.4% to 88.9% across grade levels. These numbers far exceed district and state averages—for example, 8th-grade ELA proficiency is 94% compared to the district's 65.5% and the state's 58.9%. What makes this even more impressive is the school's success with students from low socio-economic backgrounds, ranking 2nd out of 624 schools statewide for this subgroup. The school also boasts a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of just 2.2%, compared to the district's 20.5% and the state's 22.3%, indicating high student engagement and family satisfaction.

When compared to nearby schools, Orange Grove's performance is striking. Chicora Elementary (ranked 613th) and Stono Park Elementary (ranked 514th) are in the bottom 20% of the state, with chronic absenteeism rates of 38.4% and 27.5%, respectively. Even the strongest nearby traditional public school, Ashley River Creative Arts Elementary (ranked 78th), trails Orange Grove in nearly every subject and grade level. Interestingly, Orange Grove achieves these results with a per-student spending of $14,448—significantly lower than Stono Park's $28,562 or Chicora's $26,963. Other high-performing nearby charters like Carolina Voyager Charter (ranked 116th) also outperform traditional zoned schools, suggesting that school choice and specialized missions may contribute to higher performance. While 8th-grade math showed some volatility in a recent year, the school rebounded strongly, and its decade-long track record of excellence makes it a model worth considering for any parent.

Open Quote My son has attended Orange Grove Charter from K-8th grade. Aside from a few minor bumps, it has been an amazing school. Their strengths are reading, math and social studies but they do need to provide more emphasis on writing. He has met such nice friends at this school as well. Close Quote
