Summary

Academic Magnet High in North Charleston, SC, is a highly selective public magnet school serving 740 students in grades 9-12, and it consistently ranks as one of the top schools in the state.

This school's academic record is truly exceptional. Students achieve near-perfect proficiency on all state end-of-course exams—essentially 100% in English, U.S. History, and other subjects—which is 30 to 40 percentage points higher than the Charleston 01 district and state averages. The school also boasts a 100% graduation rate and a 0% dropout rate, a remarkable feat. What's even more impressive is that this success extends to every student group, including those from low socio-economic backgrounds, who rank #1 in the state. The school's culture of high expectations and rigorous academics appears to be the main driver of success, as it achieves these results with larger class sizes and moderate spending compared to many lower-performing schools nearby.

For context, the contrast with other local schools is stark. North Charleston High, located just over a mile away, ranks in the bottom 3% of schools with a 79% graduation rate and a 9% dropout rate. Even its neighbor on the same campus, Charleston School of the Arts, which is also a top-10 school, trails slightly behind in test scores. The one area of concern is chronic absenteeism, which spiked to 32% in 2023-2024 before improving to 18.6%—a rate that is still higher than some peers and may reflect the intense pressure on students. For families seeking a demanding, high-achieving environment, Academic Magnet is an outstanding option, but it's important to remember its selective admissions process means it serves a self-selected, highly motivated student body.

Open Quote Over the top school! Ranked #10 in the nation according to US News and World Report. My daughter will be graduating in two weeks and has a solid high average IQ so she should be performing well, but she is performing well into the excellent range on everything! Over 1400 SAT score so she is a Palmetto Fellows Scholar. I have to give some credit to her because she has learned how to study and she has also applied herself. There were a few weekends that she studied for 20 hours straight but there were more weekends of 2 hours of homework and she was done. The thesis requirement is incredibly strenuous and most kids really wrestle with it, but in the end they get it done. There was a point when she was struggling with outside issues. I went in and talked to every one of her teachers and all were accommodating, helpful and empowering. I feel like she will have smooth sailing in college because she is so well prepared. I also feel like I have AMHS to thank for helping her to get where she is. Seeing your child have a bright future that they are excited about is an incredible feeling! Close Quote
