Summary

Mossy Oaks Elementary in Beaufort, SC, serves 327 students in Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of the Beaufort 01 school district. The school currently holds a 2-star rating (35th percentile statewide), a notable drop from last year's 3-star rating (52nd percentile). This decline stands in contrast to nearby Port Royal Elementary, which improved from the 27th to the 55th percentile over the same period. Mossy Oaks serves a high-needs population, with 100% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch, and spends significantly more per student ($23,408) than the state average—higher than higher-performing neighbors like Coosa Elementary ($18,666) and Riverview Charter School ($18,820), which rank in the 82nd and 87th percentiles, respectively.

The most striking finding is the large gender gap in achievement. While female students at Mossy Oaks rank in the 68th percentile statewide (3 stars), male students rank in the 17th percentile (1 star)—a 51-point difference. This suggests the school has effective strategies for girls that are not reaching boys. On a positive note, the school shows clear improvement in English Language Arts as students advance: proficiency rates climb from 36.9% in 3rd grade to 58.5% in 4th grade and 62.5% in 5th grade, indicating that instructional approaches become more effective in upper grades. Additionally, the school previously earned 4-star ratings for its work with disabled students (80th and 84th percentiles in 2018-2019 and 2017-2018), suggesting a historical strength in special education that may still be leveraged.

Chronic absenteeism at Mossy Oaks is 21.4%, nearly identical to district (21.3%) and state (22.3%) averages, but significantly higher than Riverview Charter School (10.1%), Port Royal Elementary (12.0%), and Coosa Elementary (17.2%). The school's performance has been volatile over the past decade, swinging between 2 and 3 stars, with large year-to-year swings in grade-level proficiency. This suggests outcomes are highly sensitive to specific student cohorts, making it difficult to establish stable trends. For parents, this means the school is well-funded and shows strengths in upper grades and with female students, but targeted support for boys and improved attendance could be key areas for growth.

Open Quote My son first started attending this school in 1st grade and will start 3rd grade in the fall. We have been beyond blessed with amazing teachers and staff who truly care about the kids. (Mrs. Maroney & Mrs. Squires were both so amazing!) My son has an IEP and their special education program is fantastic. We adore Ms. Caton! EVERYONE wants him to succeed and to make sure they are helping him the best way they can so he can flourish. Everyone is very involved. Dr. Mac and Mr. Gruel are fantastic about keeping parents in the loop and I love seeing them out front every morning greeting kids by name at drop off. It's the little things that make this school stand out. Close Quote
