Summary:
Westerly has five public schools serving grades K–12: three elementary schools for grades K–4, one middle school for grades 5–8 and one high school. Results vary considerably among the elementary schools, while the high school is above Rhode Island’s state results in every listed subject and test. The clearest shared strength is math: the elementary schools average 53.0% proficient, compared with 31.9% statewide, and Westerly Middle School is also further above the state in math than in ELA.
State Street School stands out among the elementary schools, leading in both 2025–26 all-grades results with 51.2% proficient in ELA and 60.0% in math. Those scores are 16.4 and 19.8 percentage points higher, respectively, than Springbrook Elementary School, which has the lowest elementary results at 34.8% in ELA and 40.2% in math. Dunn's Corners School is another math strength, at 58.8% proficient, though its ELA result is 41.7%. At the high school, Westerly High School reports 69.6% in SAT ELA and 69.9% in PSAT10 ELA, both well above state results.
Recent results show gains in math overall but a mixed picture by school and subject: the four schools reporting all-grades RICAS results averaged 50.3% in math in 2025–26, up about 3.9 points from the prior year, while their ELA average was nearly unchanged. Springbrook improved in both subjects, whereas Dunn’s Corners’ ELA result fell 7.4 points. SchoolDigger’s latest statewide rankings range from the 55th percentile for Springbrook to the 85th for State Street; rankings improved from the earliest listed year for all five schools. Context measures also differ: Springbrook has the highest reported free/reduced-lunch rate, 62.14%, while State Street’s is 46.23%; reported student–teacher ratios range from 9.3 at Springbrook to 11 at Westerly Middle. These measures describe school contexts but do not explain score differences.
