With 285 students and a student-teacher ratio of 9.8, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of Walnut Street Elementary School over the past 10 years, earning a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Academically, Walnut Street Elementary School significantly underperforms the state and district averages on PSSA Math and English Language Arts assessments across all grade levels. In 2024-2025, only 12.1% of Walnut Street students were proficient or better in PSSA Math, compared to 41.7% statewide and 16% in the William Penn School District. Similarly, only 14.5% of Walnut Street students were proficient or better in PSSA English Language Arts, compared to 48.5% statewide and 26.7% in the district. The school's performance is particularly low in 3rd and 5th grade Math, where proficiency rates were just 10.7% and 6.5% respectively in 2024-2025.

While Walnut Street Elementary School spends significantly more per student ($19,652 in 2022-2023) compared to the state average, likely due to the high needs of its student population, the school's student-teacher ratio of 9.8 is lower than the nearby schools, suggesting the additional funding is not translating to improved academic outcomes. Nearby schools in the William Penn School District, such as Park Lane Elementary and Bell Avenue School, perform slightly better than Walnut Street on academic metrics but still lag behind state averages. The charter school option, Philadelphia Montessori Charter School, also outperforms Walnut Street on academic measures, despite serving a similarly disadvantaged student population.

Open Quote My child is being bullied and I need to know what I can do to help. The principal isn't cooperating.

My child was attacked by another child in school. The child pulled out a section of her hair. My child called me up to the school. When I arrived the staff was offering her ice for her head. I removed her for the day and left a message for the principle to contact me. He called and informed me the children were just playing and there was nothing he could do about it. I immediately contacted the police and returned to the school. The principle left without any regards. I was instructed by the officer that he would look into it. I snapped pictures and am awaiting a response it's been 4 days and I've heard nothing back. What should I do? Close Quote
