Summary

Sheridan School is an elementary school in Philadelphia, PA, serving 461 students in grades K-5. Despite its relatively small class sizes and high per-student spending, Sheridan School has consistently ranked among the lowest-performing elementary schools in Pennsylvania, with only 11.9% of students proficient or better in PSSA Math and 14% proficient or better in PSSA English Language Arts.

Sheridan School's academic struggles are particularly pronounced for certain student subgroups, with the school ranking in the bottom 25% of Pennsylvania elementary schools for African American, Hispanic, and low-income students in both Math and English Language Arts. This poor performance is not unique to Sheridan, as nearby Webster School and Willard Frances E School also struggle academically, ranking in the bottom 10% of Pennsylvania elementary schools.

The challenges facing Sheridan School and other low-performing schools in the Philadelphia City School District appear to be systemic, as the school's performance has remained consistently poor over the past decade with no significant improvement. While the high per-student spending at Sheridan School suggests a commitment to resources, the lack of academic progress raises questions about the effective use of these funds and the need for a more comprehensive approach to improving educational quality in the district.
