Mastery Cs-Pickett Campus

Summary:

Mastery Cs-Pickett Campus is a public charter high school serving 938 students in grades 6-12 in Philadelphia, PA. The school is part of the Philadelphia City School District, which is ranked 560 out of 606 districts in Pennsylvania and has a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Mastery Cs-Pickett Campus has a highly diverse student population, with over 93% African American students. However, the school struggles academically, with only 8.2% of students proficient or better in PSSA Math and 25.9% proficient or better in PSSA English Language Arts, compared to state averages of 39.3% and 53.8%, respectively. The school's performance on Keystone Exams is also significantly lower than the state and nearby schools like Central High School, which is ranked among the top 5 high schools in Pennsylvania. Despite these academic challenges, Mastery Cs-Pickett Campus has a relatively high four-year graduation rate of 94.1%, though it also has a higher dropout rate of 1.7% compared to the state average.

Mastery Cs-Pickett Campus serves a high-poverty student population, with 99.29% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. The school spends significantly more per student ($22,415 in 2021-2022) compared to the nearby schools, suggesting that funding and resources alone may not be the primary driver of academic success. The school's challenges may be more deeply rooted in factors such as teacher quality, curriculum, and school culture. This highlights the need for targeted interventions and support to address the unique challenges faced by the predominantly African American and low-income students at Mastery Cs-Pickett Campus.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote This is essentially a Philadelphia public school with a stricter discipline policy and less choice. High school students do not have the option to take electives - they still travel in homerooms up until the 12th grade. If your child is gifted or even slightly intelligent, there are better places in Philly to send him or her. Classrooms are very full. High demands are placed on teachers and therefore, there is a high turnover rate each year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
