Summary

Butte Creek Elementary School is a public K-8 school located in Mount Angel, Oregon, serving 282 students as part of the Silver Falls School District 4J. While the district is ranked 26 out of 140 in the state, Butte Creek Elementary has seen a decline in its statewide ranking, dropping from 142 out of 697 Oregon elementary schools in 2015-2016 to 391 out of 706 in 2024-2025. This 2-star rated school struggles with uneven performance across student subgroups and lags behind both district and state averages in academic proficiency, particularly in mathematics.

Butte Creek Elementary's chronic absenteeism rate has risen significantly, from 21.9% in 2023-2024 to 38.1% in 2022-2023, which is a major challenge for the school. When compared to nearby schools like Evergreen Elementary and Bethany Charter School, both within the Silver Falls district, Butte Creek consistently underperforms in English Language Arts and Mathematics. The school's spending per student has also decreased significantly, from $27,148 in 2021-2022 to $18,055 in 2022-2023.

While Butte Creek Elementary's student-teacher ratio has improved, from 15.8 in 2021-2022 to 13.8 in 2023-2024, it remains unclear if this change has had a positive impact on the school's performance. Addressing the school's declining ranking, uneven student group performance, high chronic absenteeism, and overall academic underperformance will be crucial for Butte Creek Elementary to provide a high-quality learning environment for its students.

Open Quote Great small K-8 school with some excellent teachers. Unfortunately there are a some subpar teachers that teach several grades. Principal does not engage parents productively with complaints, instead is defensive to the point of being intimidating. He does not seem to spend adequate time monitoring classrooms. Teacher curriculums are not published or provided to parents or students by most teachers. Like any school, you need to take an active interest in your students education and be an advocate for them when they are not receiving adequate instruction.

Budget problems have lead to deferred maintenance and textbooks are often shared and can't be brought home.

Some really fantastic teachers, great kids and teachers that volunteer to provide extracurricular activities. Secretary is fantastic and knows all of the kids. Close Quote
