Summary

Hayhurst Elementary School is a public K-8 school in Portland, Oregon, serving 562 students. The school consistently ranks among the top elementary schools in the state, outperforming both the district and state averages in English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, 82.6% of Hayhurst's 7th-grade students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 58.6% in the Portland School District and 44.2% statewide.

Hayhurst's strong academic performance extends to various student subgroups, including female students, male students, white students, and students with special education needs. The school's 5th-grade ELA proficiency rate of 73.3% in 2024-2025 was significantly higher than nearby schools like Rieke Elementary (57.1%), Maplewood Elementary (57.1%), and Capitol Hill Elementary (61.7%). This suggests that Hayhurst is a high-performing school within the Portland School District, attracting families who value strong academic outcomes.

While Hayhurst has experienced relatively high chronic absenteeism rates in recent years, ranging from 27.8% to 38.1%, this does not appear to significantly impact the school's overall academic performance. Additionally, the school's spending per student, ranging from $16,434 to $24,790 in recent years, is on par with the district and state averages, indicating that the school is allocating resources effectively to support student learning.

Open Quote The neighborhood side of Hayhurst has been a spectacular environment for our TAG daughter - great leadership under Principal Froehlich, amazing teachers (Leroy, Anderson, Aalto, etc), involved parents, a great mix of kids - it is as good as any $10,000/year private school or Focus option school. It s a rarity in our big busy world to have something like this in our backyard - truly part of our daily lives with our daughter's friends and families all around us. Move to the Hayhurst neighborhood to enjoy a wonderful place to live and a superb school for your kids. Close Quote
