Summary

Ewing Young Elementary School is a K–5 school in rural Newberg, Oregon, serving 172 students — the smallest enrollment among the elementaries in Newberg School District 29J — and it currently ranks 32nd out of 709 elementary schools statewide (95th percentile, 5 stars in 2025–26), the highest mark in its ten-year history and the only school in its comparison group inside Oregon's top 5%.

Test results are the clearest reason. In 2025–26, 74.6% of students met standards in English language arts, 70% in math, and 59.3% in science — ahead of every nearby school, including Antonia Crater Elementary School and Mabel Rush Elementary School, by 16 to 20 points in reading and math and about 15 points in science. That is roughly 30 points above the state in each subject, and 24–28 points above its own district. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 27.1% in 2022–23 to 11.4% in 2024–25 — about one-third of the state rate and less than half the district's — the sharpest improvement in the area. Results also hold across student groups: female, male, and lower-income students each rank near the top of the state, with no wide gaps between them.

Notably, the school does this with leaner resources than most schools it outperforms: $18,819 per student, below the median of its Newberg peers, and 19.7 students per teacher, the highest ratio in the comparison group. One caution for parents: with only 172 students, year-to-year figures swing more than at larger schools, and some subgroup and poverty data are reported inconsistently. Even so, the pattern is steady — a small rural school in a strong district posting stronger results than larger, better-funded neighbors such as Joan Austin Elementary School and Dundee Elementary School.
