Summary

Lost River High School is a small, rural public school serving 242 students in grades 7–12 in Merrill, Oregon, part of the Klamath County School District, in a community where 91.7% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch in 2024-25. The school ranks 87th of 271 Oregon high schools (68th percentile, 3 stars) in 2025-26, well above its district's 78th of 141 (45th percentile). After sitting in the bottom half of the state from 2016-17 through 2021-22, it moved into the top third in 2022-23 and has stayed there, peaking at 45th statewide (83rd percentile, 4 stars) in 2024-25.

Three strengths stand out. Eleventh-grade English language arts is the school's best result at 85.7% proficient — the highest in its comparison group and nearly double the state's 46.0%, ahead of Henley High School (69.5%) and Mazama High School (60.8%). The school also posts a 97.4% graduation rate (district 86.7%, state 83.0%), following 100% in three of the four prior years, and chronic absenteeism of 19.2%, the lowest of any school compared and about 14 points below the state. Students from low-income and migrant families generally outperform the school's own overall standing.

The improvement areas are math, science, and the middle grades. Math is 26.9% proficient across all grades and 21.4% in 11th grade; science is 23.5% overall. Eighth grade is the weakest link, with 8th grade ELA at 26.8% versus 41.5% statewide and 8th grade science at 17.1% versus 27.7% — and because Lost River serves grades 7–12, those students stay on campus through graduation. The most telling comparison is Bonanza Junior/Senior High School, nearly identical in size, grade span, district, and poverty level, yet ranking 75 places lower and trailing Lost River on every grade-and-subject line reported, despite spending $2,405 more per student. Because the school is small, single-year ranking swings should be read with caution.
