Summary

Elkton Charter School is an alternative public charter school located in Elkton, Oregon, serving grades K-12 with a total enrollment of 214 students. As part of the Elkton School District 34, this unique educational institution offers a distinct approach and curriculum compared to the traditional public schools in the area.

One of the school's key strengths is its impressive 4-year graduation rate of 92.9% in the 2023-2024 school year, significantly higher than the state average of 80.5%. However, Elkton Charter School has faced challenges with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 34.3% to 52.5% over the past few years, which is notably higher than the state average. The school's academic performance has been mixed, with some grade levels and subjects outperforming the state, while others underperform. For example, the school's 11th-grade proficiency rate in English Language Arts is 50%, higher than the state's 44.4%, but its 6th-grade proficiency rate is only 5.9%, significantly lower than the state.

Elkton Charter School serves a population with significant economic challenges, as indicated by the high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 54.89% to 57.01% over the past few years. The school's higher spending per student, at $30,739 in 2022-2023, and lower student-teacher ratio, ranging from 10.1 to 12.5, suggest that the school is investing significant resources in its educational program. These factors may contribute to the school's success in areas like graduation rates, but the school should continue to evaluate the effectiveness of its resource allocation to ensure optimal student outcomes across all grade levels and subject areas.

Open Quote Elkton Charter School developed a well integrated plan for use of its Charter School money and rights. Its charter focuses on ecology using its position on the Umpqua River, and less than an hour from the Oregon Coast as a tool. It's emphasis on technology, agriculture, and integrated art allows for a variety of skills to develop. The staff supports academic development, and athletic/social development and helps the graduates plan for their futures as part of the curriculum. They have a remarkably state high ranking for a small town school. Close Quote
