Camas Valley School

Camas Valley School is a public PK–12 school serving 207 students in the rural Douglas County community of Camas Valley, Oregon, and it is the only school in the Camas Valley School District 21J. Because there are no other schools within 20 miles and the district contains just this one school, the only meaningful comparison available is the Oregon state average.

Academics are the clear weak spot. In statewide testing, 29.3% of students were proficient in English language arts versus 43.8% statewide, 16.3% in math versus 32.9%, and 21.1% in science versus 30.6%; math is the weakest, at roughly half the state rate. Results are uneven rather than uniformly low. Seventh grade is a bright spot, beating the state in ELA (56.3% vs. 45.3%) and nearly matching it in math, while 5th and 6th grade are the deepest concern, with ELA at 13.3% and 22.2% and math at 6.7% and 5.9%. Eleventh grade math is under 5% (state 22.9%), and 3rd grade ELA is 7.7% against 41.5% statewide. With only about 15–25 students per grade, one student can move a grade-level rate by 5–7 points.

Graduation and attendance, by contrast, are competitive. In 2024–25, 88.2% of students graduated, above the state's 83.0%, and chronic absenteeism was 33.3%, essentially matching the state's 33.5%. Resources are generous for a small district: a 10.9-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio and $20,936 spent per student. The free/reduced-lunch share jumped to 90.82%, which most likely reflects a change in eligibility rules rather than a sudden shift in family economics. Keep in mind that graduation rates have swung widely in recent years, and testing data covers a different period than graduation and attendance figures.
