Summary

Orenco Elementary School is a K–6 school at 22550 NW Birch St in Hillsboro, Oregon, serving about 450 students as part of Hillsboro School District 1J. It is one of the larger elementaries in its immediate area. In 2025–2026 it ranks 447th of 709 Oregon elementary schools — the 37th percentile, a 2-star rating, and its lowest position in the ten years on record. That is down from the 77th percentile (4 stars) in 2014–2015. The slide has been steady, but it accelerated recently: 67th percentile in 2021–22, 64th, 63rd, 54th, and now 37th.

Orenco trails nearly every nearby Hillsboro school, and the gap is not explained by student poverty: its free/reduced-lunch rate is nearly identical to Indian Hills, Ladd Acres, Imlay, and Quatama, yet those schools rank between the 55th and 84th percentiles with reading proficiency from 41% to 61%, versus Orenco's 37.6%. Science is the standout weak spot: 11.9% proficiency against 25.5% district-wide and 30.6% statewide, with every local peer but Reedville scoring at least double. Math (31.3%) actually edges the district (29.5%), and 6th-grade English language arts (46.3%) beats both district and state, but 5th grade is weak in every subject. Attendance, though, is a genuine strength: 22.8% chronic absenteeism is about 9 points better than the district and 11 better than the state, so the slide is not an attendance story.

Resources sit at the lean end: $19,873 per student, second-lowest among local peers, and a student–teacher ratio of 18.2, the highest in the group. Subgroup results are uneven — gifted and talented students rank 65th of 70, the weakest single figure in the data, while special education students reached the 89th percentile in 2023–24. The decline is long-running rather than a one-year blip, but the 6th-grade reading results, strong attendance, and past special education gains are real footholds to build on.
