Vale Middle School

Vale Middle School is a small public school in Vale, Oregon — a rural community in Malheur County in eastern Oregon — serving about 120 students in grades 7 and 8 as part of Vale School District 84.

Academically, Vale Middle is the strongest of the three middle schools in its corner of eastern Oregon. It is the only school in the group scoring above the state average in all three subjects: 50.8% in English language arts (state: 43.8%), 46.2% in math (state: 32.9%), and 36.4% in science (state: 30.6%). Those results comfortably outpace Nyssa Middle School (42.9% ELA, 28.2% math, 22.2% science) and Ontario Middle School (37.1%, 26.0%, 14.1%). The district picture is similar: Vale School District 84 ranks 9th of 141 Oregon districts, ahead of Nyssa School District 26 (27th) and Ontario School District 8C (118th). Attendance is another standout: 13.6% of students were chronically absent in 2024–25, well below the state's 33.5% and lower than both neighbors — and down from nearly 40% three years earlier.

Perhaps the most impressive result is how well the school serves students from low-income families. With roughly 90% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, Vale's low-income student group ranks 8th of 256 Oregon schools — the 97th percentile — with a 5-star rating. Classes are also small, at 13.3 students per teacher versus 15.8 at Nyssa and 15.1 at Ontario, while per-student spending ($22,395) is in line with its neighbors. Two things to watch: the school's overall state ranking has eased from the 88th percentile in 2022–23 to the 77th percentile in each of the last two years, and its 7th graders trail their own district, as does science. Because the school is small, single-year changes in any one grade should be read as directional rather than precise.
