Mitchell School District 55 is a four-school central Oregon district serving grades K–12 from two campuses — one in Prineville and one in Mitchell — and its 1,563 students are overwhelmingly enrolled in virtual or career-academy programs rather than a traditional neighborhood school. Cascade Virtual Academy accounts for 1,226 students, or 78.4% of district enrollment, while Insight School of Oregon Painted Hills (211 students, grades 7–12), Destinations Career Academy of Oregon (79, grades 9–12) and Mitchell School (47, K–12) together serve fewer than 340. The district itself is rated well — rank 18 of 141 Oregon districts, or the 87th percentile.
Destinations Career Academy of Oregon posts the best test scores in the district — ELA 60.0, math 67.9 and science 64.3, more than double the state in math and science — and has held 5 stars for two years. Yet its graduation rate is 58.3% and 73.0% of its students are chronically absent. Insight School of Oregon Painted Hills climbed from the 37th to the 92nd percentile in three years and beats state averages in all three subjects, but has the district's lowest graduation rate at 50.0%.
