Summary:
The Scio, Oregon area is served by five schools spanning kindergarten through 12th grade, all part of Scio School District 95, which ranks 44 of 141 districts statewide (69th percentile, 3 stars). Total enrollment is 1,998 students, but the mix is unusual: three conventional brick-and-mortar schools, plus two very different outliers. Willamette Connections Academy, a K–12 alternative/virtual school, enrolls 1,282 students — about two-thirds of all students in the area and more than five times the size of any other school. At the other extreme, Lourdes School is a K–8 school of just 36 students.
On academics, Willamette Connections Academy posts the highest proficiency in all three subjects at the All Grades level (ELA 46.8, math 43.4, science 38.2), and its 11th-grade results are striking — ELA 59.3, math 50.0 (more than double the state's 22.9), and science 49.1. Its graduation rate, however, is 76.2%, below the district and state. Scio High School has the area's best graduation rate at 89.5%, but also the lowest All Grades math in the set (23.9). Scio Middle School sits below district and state in all three subjects, and Centennial Elementary School is the only 1-star school, with a particularly weak 5th grade (math 13.5, science 11.3) even though its 4th-grade math (42.2) beats the state.
Two patterns stand out for families. First, chronic absenteeism is a system-wide issue: four of five schools fall between 39.5% and 47.5%, well above the state's 33.5%, with only Lourdes School (32.4%, on 36 students) near the state level. Second, money and class size don't track results here — Scio High School spends the most ($16,479 per student) with the smallest classes, while Willamette Connections Academy reports the least spending ($2,120) and largest ratios; the two are structurally too different for a causal reading. Note also that blanks in the data are suppressed for privacy, not zeros — Lourdes School has 11 suppressed test entries, and free/reduced lunch is uniformly near 62–64% across the three traditional public schools.
