Summary:
Clayton has two schools: Crain Elementary School, serving prekindergarten through grade 8, and Clayton High School, serving grades 9–12. Enrollment is small, at 116 and 100 students, respectively. The schools show different strengths in English language arts (ELA) and math, but neither reaches state proficiency in its reported subjects. Most importantly, every supplied 2025–2026 proficiency result is below its corresponding state level, with the High School’s science result furthest behind at 10% versus 30% statewide.
The schools stand out in different shared subjects: Crain leads in reported all-grades math, with 19% proficient versus 11% at the High School, while Clayton High leads in ELA, 24% versus 21%. Both remain below state results in those subjects; their ELA rates are 2 and 5 points below the state, and their math rates are 14 and 6 points below, respectively. The High School’s 11th graders also trail state results: by 12 points in ELA, 6 in math, and 11 each in science and U.S. History. On non-test measures, the High School’s 2024–2025 graduation rate was 82%, 4 points above the state, and its 2025–2026 chronic absenteeism was 1%, 15 points below the state.
ELA and math improved at both schools from 2024–2025 to 2025–2026: Crain rose 1 point in ELA and 4 in math, while Clayton High rose 3 and 5 points. High School science and U.S. History moved the other way, falling 6 and 2 points. SchoolDigger’s statewide percentile for the High School rose from 17 in 2023–2024 to 23 in 2025–2026; Crain’s supplied ranking history is older, ending in 2014–2015. Context measures also differ: the 2024–2025 free/reduced lunch eligible share was 80% at Crain and 69% at the High School, while student–teacher ratios were 11.8 and 12.9. Because the schools serve different grade spans, their all-grades results are not a same-grade comparison.
