Summary

Buckeye Trail Middle School is a small rural school serving 213 students in grades 6 through 8 on Wintergreen Road in Lore City, Ohio, part of the East Guernsey Local district. It currently ranks 600th of 1,046 Ohio middle schools — the 43rd percentile, a two-star rating, and its lowest statewide standing in the ten years of data available. Two years ago it ranked as high as the 72nd percentile and beat the state average in every tested subject; in 2025–26 it beats the state in only two of seven.

Compared with five nearby middle schools, Buckeye Trail spends the most per student ($11,886) and has one of the smallest classes (14.9 students per teacher, down from 17.8), yet it ranks below East Muskingum Middle School and Barnesville Middle School. It was also the only school in that group to fall sharply last year — 19 percentile points — while Newcomerstown Middle School, Meadowbrook Middle School and Barnesville all moved up. The subject picture is genuinely mixed. Math in grades 6 and 7 is above the state average and second-best among the six schools, but grade 6 English/language arts is about 15 points below the state, and 8th-grade science is 26 points below (35.1% versus 61.2% statewide), ahead of only Cambridge Middle School. It has fallen impressively — from 42.1% in 2021–22 to 24.5% — but it rose slightly last year and now runs 6 points above the district's 18.4%, the widest school-versus-district gap among these schools. Students from low-income families are currently rated one star. The bottom line for families: money and class sizes are not the constraint here. The most useful priorities are looking closely at 8th-grade science, strengthening grade 6 reading, and closing the middle-school attendance gap.
