Summary

McKinley Elementary School is a K–5 school in Xenia, Ohio, serving 313 students as part of the Xenia Community City district. The district overall ranks 472nd of 773 Ohio districts (39th percentile, 2 stars), but McKinley Elementary School performs above that context: in 2025–2026 it ranked 649th of 1,560 elementary schools statewide (58th percentile, 3 stars). The school has improved steadily — from 2015–2016 through 2017–2018 it sat in the 39th–45th percentile with 2 stars, while since 2020–2021 it has consistently earned 3 stars, ranging from the 51st to 65th percentile. Among Xenia elementary schools, only Tecumseh Elementary School (62nd percentile) and Arrowood Elementary (61st) rank slightly higher.

Results are split sharply by grade. Grades 4 and 5 generally exceed district and state averages: 5th-grade ELA proficiency was 80.5% and 5th-grade science 73.2%, the highest among the listed Xenia elementary schools, ahead of Tecumseh Elementary School, Shawnee Elementary School, Arrowood Elementary, and Cox Elementary School. Third grade is the clear weak spot: Math 3 was 53.2%, 20.6 points below the district and 8.9 points below the state, and ELA 3 was 55.3%, 9.0 points below the district. This is a sharp reversal — 3rd-grade ELA was 78.0% in 2023–2024 — and likely the main reason the school's overall rank dipped. Nearby higher-performing schools still score higher in upper grades; Trebein Elementary School, for example, scored 93.3% in 5th-grade ELA.

Attendance is a relative strength: McKinley's 2025–2026 chronic absenteeism rate of 18.7% is the lowest among Xenia elementary schools and below the district's 28.6%. It still trails nearby suburban schools by a wide margin, with Bell Creek Intermediate School at 4.2%, Stephen Bell Elementary School at 5.8%, Trebein Elementary School at 6.6%, Valley Elementary School at 7.2%, Main Elementary School at 8.1%, and Fairbrook Elementary School at 8.6%. The school also serves some groups well: low-income students ranked in the 75th–86th percentile with 4 stars for three straight years, and special education students ranked 202nd of 935 (78th percentile, 4 stars) in 2024–2025. Gifted students showed very low rankings in older data. Overall, McKinley is a solid, improving school that outperforms its district, with its biggest academic concern in 3rd grade and its biggest gap versus nearby suburbs in attendance.

Open Quote DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD HERE. I don't recommend this place to anyone! My son has been bullied by teachers and students from the second grade all the way to the fifth. One year it was so bad with this boy at school he was coming home in tears, so at his iep meeting that year I brought it up (bc the teacher we talked to was doing nothing) and I was told "oh he is having troubles at home" then the principle looked me dead in my face and said "maybe it's a situation where boys will be boys".. this year in the fifth grade was the worst though.. my son a couple of weeks ago got attacked in the boys bathroom by two boys, when the teacher found out they were in there she had them all come out and my son told her that they were trying to dunk his head in the toilet and punching him.. she didn't Call me. my son sat through school all day worried how he was going to tell me.. then when I went into the school I talked to the principle and asked why no-one called me and he threw his hands up in the air and said " how could we call you if no-one knew!" The teacher told me she didn't tell him bc she didn't see it happen but took the two boys recess away which she thought justified what they did to my son. I also found the two moms of the boys who did this to him and they never called one of them and the other boys mother said they didn't go into much detail.. I quickly pulled my son out to homeschool.. most of the teachers also don't know how to help kids that are on the on the spectrum.. the principle had the nerve to tell me my son was a "tough case" bc he was putting his head down after he was done with his work.. this place is a joke!
