Summary

Sylvan Elementary School is a K–5 school serving about 415 students in Sylvania, Ohio, a Toledo-area community, and it is part of the Sylvania Schools district. In 2025–26 it ranked 295th of 1,560 Ohio elementary schools — the 81st percentile, or 4 stars — its best statewide standing since 2020–21 and a sharp recovery from a low of 47th percentile in 2017–18. The district itself is strong (177th of 773 Ohio districts, 77th percentile), and Sylvan's standing runs slightly ahead of it.

Proficiency is well above state levels in every subject and grade tested, exceeding the state by roughly 9 to 19 points and beating the district in six of seven tests. English language arts is the standout: 3rd-grade ELA (83.0%) is second-best among the seven Sylvania elementaries, behind only Highland Elementary School. Chronic absenteeism has dropped to 7.4% — roughly half the district rate and far below Hawkins STEAM Elementary School (22.5%) and Dorr Street Elementary School (27.4%). Sylvan spends near the low end locally ($10,275 per pupil) with a moderate 15.9:1 ratio, yet posts strong results. It sits effectively third of seven in its district, in a dead heat with demographically similar Maplewood Elementary School and ahead of higher-poverty Whiteford Elementary School and Stranahan Elementary School. Neighboring districts' schools, such as Mcgregor Elementary School and Monac Elementary School, trail by wide margins.

Two areas stand out for improvement. Fifth-grade math is the persistent soft spot, Sylvan's lowest score in each of the last three years, though it righted itself this year (72.5%). More significantly, special education students ranked 673rd of 935 (28th percentile, 1 star) in 2024–25 — the only 1-star result in the school's data. Encouragingly, low-income students rank in the 76th percentile, matching or exceeding the school overall, a hallmark of an effective school.
