Milkovich Middle School

Milkovich Middle School is a 664-student school serving grades 5–8 at 19800 Stafford Ave in Maple Heights, Ohio, the only middle school in the Maple Heights City district, an inner-ring Cleveland suburb. The state ranks it as persistently low-performing: it has earned a 1-star rating in every one of the ten years reported, and its statewide percentile has never exceeded 24 — it sits at the 18th percentile in 2025–26 (855th of 1,046 schools). The district ranks lower still. What stands out most is stability: the percentile has moved only between 18 and 24 for a decade, a long plateau rather than decline or recovery.

Proficiency runs far below state benchmarks: general-education results sit roughly 23 to 39 points below the state, including 6th-grade math at 16.8% versus 56.2% statewide. Chronic absenteeism is the most pressing problem, at 47.5% — nearly half the school. Affluent neighbors are far lower (Orchard Middle School 4.1%, Ballard Brady Middle School 4.6%, Cuyahoga Hts Middle School 6.1%), but Shaker Hts Middle School is the instructive case: with a comparable poverty profile, it posts 52–66% proficiency and 19.1% absenteeism. Among demographically similar peers, Garfield Heights Middle School is higher at 63.8%, while Warrensville Heights Middle School (32.5%) and Heskett Middle School (41.2%) are lower. Milkovich's rate is now worse than its own district's 44.4%, a reversal from 2022–23.

There are real bright spots. Milkovich reached 100% proficiency on the Algebra I end-of-course exam two years running, beating the state (61.6%) and its district (34.2%) — though that is an accelerated cohort, since 8th-grade math sits at 29.3%, which nonetheless more than doubled from 12.2% and leads Warrensville (18.7%), Heskett (12.5%) and Garfield Heights (12.0%). Class sizes improved to a 13.8 student–teacher ratio. The clearest concern is special education: those students rank in the 1st percentile statewide (574th of 579 schools), sustained across multiple years. On state subgroup rankings, which compare each group with the same group at other schools, African American students rank at the 36th percentile — above the school's overall standing — while low-income students rank 17th.
