Jackson Middle School, at 21 Tropic St in Jackson, OH, serves 525 students in grades 6–8 and is the largest middle school in its area — nearly three times the size of Eastern Middle School and 18% bigger than Minford Middle School. It holds a 3-star rating in the state's 2025-26 rankings, placing 439th of 1,046 Ohio middle schools, and belongs to the Jackson City district, the highest-ranked district among its neighbors.

The school's strengths are concentrated in the earlier grades and in advanced math. Jackson leads every nearby school — and the state — in 6th-grade math (73.0% proficient vs. 56.2% statewide), 7th-grade math (57.6%), 6th-grade ELA (63.1%) and 8th-grade science (71.5%). Its Algebra I results have been far above its context, though they dipped to 73.1% this year. Class sizes are comparatively small (12.8 students per teacher) and per-student spending was $9,505 in 2018-19, second only to Wellston Middle School. Low-income students here rank at the 75th percentile (4 stars), well above the school's own 58th-percentile standing, and chronic absenteeism has fallen from 34.2% in 2021-22 to 22.1% in 2025-26 — the steepest improvement among its peers, though still above the district rate.

Two specific problems stand out. Eighth-grade math proficiency is 24.7%, roughly half the state's 52.0% and the lowest in the comparison group — even below lower-ranked schools such as Vinton County Middle School (68.9%) and Eastern Middle School (64.4%) — while the same students scored 62.5% in ELA and 71.5% in science. Seventh-grade ELA has fallen for three straight years, from 79.0% to 60.3%, the only tested subject where Jackson trails the state. Overall, the school's statewide rank has slipped about 13 percentile points in two years, from the 70th–71st percentile in 2023-24 to the 58th now. Absenteeism also remains higher than Waverly Junior High School (15.4%) and Minford Middle School (20.8%).
