Athens High School is a public high school in The Plains, Ohio, serving grades 9–12 in the Athens City School District and enrolling 685 students. In 2025–2026 it ranked 378th of 795 Ohio high schools — the 52nd percentile — with a 3-star rating, and its rank has generally bounced between the 48th and 65th percentile since 2020–2021. Its graduation rate is a bright spot at 94.1%, up from 89.8% and 87.6% in the two prior years, but chronic absenteeism is a real concern at 35.8%, well above the district's 26.4% and higher than Alexander Junior/Senior High School (25.9%) and Logan High School (30.6%).

Academically, Athens is strongest in the humanities and biology and weakest in math. In 2025–2026 state end-of-course tests, it posted 84.2% proficiency in American Government — the best in the local comparison group and 12.6 points above the state — plus 75.0% in American History, 72.7% in Biology, 70.5% in English II, and 53.7% in Geometry, all above state averages.
